Supporting mental health and psychosocial wellbeing through awareness, compassionate care, and community action.
The Gambia is a small West African country situated along the River Gambia, bordered by Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital is Banjul. Covering approximately 11,300 square kilometres, the country has a rich cultural heritage shaped by diverse communities, languages, and traditions.
Mental health remains an important public health and development concern. Access to care is affected by stigma, financial barriers, long travel distances, and the concentration of specialist services in urban areas. Depression, anxiety, and substance-use disorders can go unrecognised or untreated, affecting individuals, families, and livelihoods.
IVMHO–The Gambia works to address these challenges through school and community mental health awareness, home care support, psychoeducation, volunteer training, and collaboration with health professionals and local stakeholders. By promoting early help-seeking, supporting families, and connecting people to appropriate services, IVMHO contributes to stronger community support and improved psychosocial wellbeing. Its approach places dignity, inclusion, and compassionate care at the centre of its work.
Our team leads and coordinates IVMHO’s mental health and psychosocial support programmes across The Gambia.
